The Overview

What we do

We assist men transitioning from the Alabama's prison system.

We address the needs of men at risk of incarceration or recidivism and walk with them from prison and into productivity and purpose.

When men graduate our program, they have a full time job, housing transportation, and money in the bank to begin the next chapter of their life.

Why we do it

We do it for two reasons-- the first is practical, the second is biblical.

Practically, men making the transition face many obstacles (including lack of identification, needing help navigating legal issues that often snowball during incarceration, employment + housing + transportation). With the right launch pad and supportive services in place, most men willingly do the work and launch strong into their next chapter.

Biblically, we work from the premise that when we serve others, we serve Jesus (see Matthew 25:40-45). And, the words of the Gospel should be paired with the works of meeting practical needs (James 2:16, Matthew 10:42).

How we do it

Our six-month program provides opportunities that support successful transformations (from the inside out) which empower, strengthen and create productive, contributing members of society.

Some people think of places like ours as "halfway houses."

We believe "whole way" describes it better. We are a one-stop shop that facilitates change in every area of life.

How It Works

Seven

Six months

Most issues that "land" people in prison don't happen in a moment. The solution doesn't occur instantly, either.

Our six month program insures participants get a solid start and are well on their way towards lasting breakthrough.

Though the program lasts six months, participants only graduate when they complete the mandatory time AND the program requirements.

Needs analysis

Our intake assessments determine what we need to "work on" first.

Whether it's obtaining identification, handling legal issues and warrants, addressing health issues, completing a G.E.D., attending vocational training, or accessing outstanding benefits (i.e., veteran benefits, etc.), we start strong and with intention.

Sustainable employment

We help place residents in jobs they can keep upon graduation, helping them make the transition away from Shepherds Fold and into the next chapter of life.

Further, we insure these jobs provide a livable wage, so they can maintain stability as they move forward.

Sobriety

Our 12-step group, drug testing, and peer support networks help residents move beyond the addictions of the past and maintain control over every aspect of their health & wellbeing.

We've seen that if participants can handle the "hardest" areas of life, everything else becomes easier.

Support from peers

Three weekly peer support classes (including the 12-step study) provide structure and support for residents, empowering them to leverage the help of healthy relationships that encourage them to continue making meaningful progress in life.

Financial literacy

Each resident completes a class on financial literacy, insuring they know how to earn, save, spend, and invest for themselves and their loved ones.

Residents obtain skills on banking, budgeting, and building for the future.

Life plan

Residents identify their purpose and build a life plan which provides action steps to fulfill it.

They learn the importance of a holistic approach to living-- one that includes fitness, finance, family, faith, friends, and factory (work / employment).

Results

We've been at it for 40 years (1986-2026). From our beginning in one home, we've grown to serve hundreds at a time on a full-service campus.

Only 3% of program graduates ever face legal issues again, compared to a 60-65% recidivism rate within 5 years nationally.
